David had a successful commercial building construction business in Montana at the time he and Darlene were shown the Quixtar Marketing Plan by their two oldest sons. Darlene had known the boys were involved as Quixtar Independent Business Owners (IBOs) for about four months, but Greg and Brad wanted to have reached a certain level of success before they shared the plan with their dad. They wanted to have proof that they could they build a Quixtar business. In the meantime, Greg and Brad had asked Darlene not to tell David about their involvement with the Quixtar business. So Darlene just bought products from Brad, their sponsor, and kept quiet.
Darlene was ready for the Quixtar opportunity. She was seriously considering starting her own business. The main drawback was that she didn’t want to give up the freedom she had enjoyed for so many years. Everything she did was of her own choosing because she didn’t have to work. After seeing the Quixtar plan she was willing to give the time needed to the business because she knew the flexibility it would eventually give David. When Greg finally showed his father the plan, David was impressed, but it just seemed “too good to be true”. After a few weeks of checking out Quixtar and some successful IBOs, he decided to get involved.
The construction business had been very good to the Duncan family financially. They lived in a beautiful home and traveled to nice places. What they didn’t have was TIME. They had a very close family, but David didn’t have as much time as he wanted to spend with his family. Darlene feels one of her greatest rewards is that David’s energy is no longer stripped by stress. He now uses his energy and time to enjoy his family, play golf, travel and help others who want to build their own businesses. He challenges people – many much younger than he – to keep up with his pace.
All the Duncans love the Quixtar business. All three boys are successful IBOs. Greg and Laurie, and Brad and Julie are Triple Diamonds. Dru and Debra are actively building the business. David had always wanted to be involved in business with his sons, but he didn’t want them in the construction business. David comments, “I would never have guessed that it would be a business they found, and certainly would never have dreamed it would be the Quixtar business. It’s great to be in our own business and yet so closely associated with our three sons.” Several of Darlene’s family is also in the business, including her mother who is in her eighties.
David sold his construction business two and a half years after becoming an IBO, and was then free to live wherever he chose. With all three of their sons living in the Seattle area, David and Darlene decided to settle there as well. When things changed and all three boys and their families have moved from Seattle, Greg and Laurie to Whitefish, Montana and Dru and Brad and Julie to Spokane, Washington. David and Darlene also moved to Spokane.
Several years ago, David became ill and was admitted to the hospital with double pneumonia. He developed Adult Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (AARDS), from which few people survive. He was also paralyzed and lost most of his muscle mass.
After spending 112 days in the hospital (over half of them in ICU) and the Rehabilitation Institute, he went home.
David’s recovery has been miraculous. He continues to work on strengthening and toning his muscles.
He did play a few games of golf this past summer, which was a goal he set while in ‘Rehab’. There were hundreds of thousands of people who prayed for David and the Duncans know that David’s healing is God’s answer to those prayers.
In the spring, David and Darlene started looking for a house to buy, instead of building, as they had planned. By the end of June, they had found a lovely house on a beautiful piece of property. They love being close to Brad and Julie, Dru and Debra, and seven of their nine grandchildren. Another real bonus is they are also near a large number of their business associates.
As much time as possible is spent at their home relaxing, entertaining friends, family and business associates as well as spending time with Greg and Laurie and the two oldest grandchildren.
Working with people, helping them to achieve goals they never dreamed they could or would achieve, is probably what the Duncans enjoy most of all about the Quixtar business. David’s past experience of being on the board of directors of several companies, including a national banking chain, gives him a great appreciation for the Quixtar Corporation. He continually tells others of the aggressive posture and stability of this company.
Both David and Darlene are grateful that their sons saw the potential of a Quixtar business and shared it with them. They are excited about being involved in a vehicle that works for all ages, and one that can be instrumental in helping people realize their dreams. They now just shake their heads when they think back to when they made the decision to be involved in the Quixtar business. David says, “This has been the best business decision I have ever made—this business has given us a wonderful lifestyle. When we first became IBOs, we didn’t have any idea as to how big this venture would become.”
“This business is our life and we love it!” says David.
